 a) What have you learned about the processes of designing a sound research study in class?

We discussed several ideas and elements of conducting a research study in class. Learning about the different methods by which you can conduct a research study such as focus groups, surveys, usability tests, analyzing documents, and more, has helped me to better understand that there is more than just one way to conduct a research study. I think that it is interesting how many different ways you can actually conduct a research study. Being able to pick from a range of different methods, and customize a research study to fit the element that you want to research is a skill that can be used to learn more about almost anything. Whether a research study is done on a small or large scale, I think it is important to do it carefully and correctly. Doing the CITES training online as well as the lectures in class have really helped me to understand how to conduct a research study in the correct way.

b) What have these processes taught you about your future roles as a technical and professional communicator?

Learning the processes of how to conduct a research study has taught me that you always need to be careful and check that you are leaving out as little as possible. In the future, I do think that I would like to conduct a research study at some point. The topic that I did for my literature review and research proposal have definitely inspired me to think more about different ways that things are communicated and I would like to look at more topics to research that are similar to the topics for my papers in this class.

  1. Hey Cheyenne! I enjoyed reading your post! I like how you mentioned that we were given multiple different methods to choose from. If we had been given a topic and research method, I definitely feel that it would be more difficult. But luckily, like you said, we were able to practicably learn about anything we wanted too! I also like that you mentioned how careful and correct you must be, while double-checking your work! That is definitely a key point I took away too!
